NEW YORK – After opening the 2015 season on the road against a pair of tough opponents, the Xavier women’s soccer team collected a pair of honors from the BIG EAST Conference office on Monday. Freshman forward Samantha Dewey was named Rookie of the Week for her offensive performance against Evansville and Purdue.Dewey, a native of Fairland, Ind., totaled four points on a goal and two assists during the Musketeers opening weekend. When Xavier faced a 2-0 deficit at Evansville on Friday, Dewey helped lay the groundwork for the Kenadie Carlson‘s first goal of the season, the first of three unanswered goals that lead to the win in the season opener. Dewey’s four shots against the Purple Aces were a team-high for the Musketeers who came back to take the 3-2 win in overtime.

When Xavier found itself in a 2-0 hole on Sunday at Purdue, the rookie notched a goal just before the half to send the Musketeers into the break within striking distance. After Tori Doss‘ first goal of the game against the Boilermakers tied the match at 2-2, Dewey  set up the shot for the go-ahead goal, Doss’ second goal of the day. The Musketeers held the lead until the final minutes when a quick offensive outburst from Purdue left the final score at 4-3 in favor of the Boilermakers.

In addition to Dewey’s honor, Doss’ team-high two goals against Purdue, plus a pair of assists from the game against Evansville earned her a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the week. Doss, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., was the leading scorer for the Musketeers in 2014. This is Doss’ second nomination to the Weekly Honor Roll. She was previously honored the week of Sept. 8, 2014. Doss also previously earned Rookie of the Week honors from the BIG EAST during the 2013 season.

The women’s soccer team returns to action on Friday in game one of a double-header to open the Xavier home schedule. The women will face off with Toledo at 5:00 p.m., followed by the Xavier men’s soccer team hosting Eastern Illinois at 8:00 p.m.
